It's up to you how much you decide to relate these videos to Krishna consciousness. It's not that you have to; you're unlikely to look at the Car Repairs videos from a KC angle of vision.
Your get-together discussions, talks, and seminars can be just about practical everyday issues and concerns or very specific or relatively unknown subjects.
You may find these videos mundane as devotees or feel they don't directly reflect Krishna consciousness. However, I included them for the following reasons:
- As mentioned earlier, they serve a practical purpose.
- In the spirit of HH Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati, who created The Harmonist to discuss everyday topics from a Krishna-conscious perspective.
- Based on over 25 years as a devotee—including many years as a brahmacari and as an ex-social worker—I have encountered and supported devotees through some of the most challenging situations, particularly in dysfunctional relationships. While Krishna conscious guidance should generally be enough to encourage better communication and behavior, when devotees are struggling with emotional intelligence and fundamental sadhu qualities, more specialized understanding and intervention become necessary.
It is well known that devotee divorce rates are at least as high as those of non-devotees—if not higher—yet devotees often have less awareness of the support available to them.
Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura established and published The Harmonist (originally Sajjana Toṣaṇī, which was later continued in English as The Harmonist) to present Krishna consciousness in a way that addressed contemporary issues and to clarify misunderstandings about bhakti and Vaishnavism.
Key Reasons for Publishing The Harmonist:
-
Defending Pure Bhakti – During his time, various groups distorted the teachings of Lord Chaitanya, mixing devotional principles with impersonalism, casteism, and sahajiya tendencies. The Harmonist served as a medium to refute these misconceptions and uphold the pure siddhānta (philosophical conclusions) of Gaudiya Vaishnavism.
-
Engaging with the Modern World – Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī was known for his pragmatic approach to spreading Krishna consciousness. He recognized that engaging with contemporary intellectual discourse and societal issues was necessary to present bhakti in a relevant and authoritative way. The Harmonist addressed topics such as education, social reform, and politics from a Krishna conscious perspective.
-
Providing Krishna Conscious Answers to Everyday Issues – Just as he instructed his disciples to use modern tools like the printing press, automobiles, and typewriters for Krishna’s service, he also used The Harmonist to demonstrate how Krishna consciousness could be applied to real-life situations.
-
Counteracting British Colonial and Materialistic Influence – The magazine challenged the materialistic worldview propagated by Western education and British colonial rule in India. It aimed to re-establish the spiritual foundation of Indian culture, emphasizing devotion to Krishna over mundane nationalism or blind adherence to Western values.
-
Spreading Lord Chaitanya’s Teachings Globally – By publishing in English, The Harmonist extended Gaudiya Vaishnava philosophy beyond Bengal and India, preparing the groundwork for the future worldwide movement that Śrīla Prabhupāda later expanded.
Overall, The Harmonist was a tool to harmonize spiritual truth with the intellectual and practical concerns of the time, ensuring that Krishna consciousness remained accessible, relevant, and properly understood.
